Letter Read at Ashley Baptist Association

October 20, 2003

I am grateful for the privilege to share with you in God’s work as fellow brethren for the sake of the gospel of Jesus Christ our Lord. I realize to some of you I am a Samaritan because my training was not strictly Southern Baptist. Also to others qualifications as a Holy Spirit called minister in Jesus Christ are also often thought as a leper since an unfortunate previous marital failure. Yet as Paul said in 2 Corinthians 12:9, “Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may dwell in me.” NASB  I am thankful for any weakness given by God for a greater good in His work and purpose.

As a fellow minister of Jesus Christ I wish to share with you my burden for preservation of the pure gospel of Jesus Christ. Available to you are a two items in publication. One is entitled a Resolution of Encouragement in Gospel Purity and the other Scriptural Model for Baptismal or Ordination Acceptance in New Testament Pattern Churches for Preservation of a Pure Gospel of Christ. These are released for your personal consideration. No action is requested.

As I have prayed about this stand I believe it is fitting that a movement of purification begins from the Ashley County Baptist Association. The first associational moderator in 1850 was a Baptist preacher and farmer named Benajah Carroll. He and his wife Mary had twelve children. One young man about seven years old probably present at the meeting was Benajah Harvey Carroll better known as B. H. Carroll. He later when his father moved to Texas became a prominent Southern Baptist preacher. He was founder and president of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary until his death in 1914. Another son was born in Texas in 1858 named J. M. Carroll.  He was a prominent Baptist historian writing The Trail of Blood. His vast historical library on church history is now at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. These men spent their lives contending for the faith once delivered to the saints. Their writings and other men of God before us who felt compelled to preach and defend a pure gospel in the Lord’s churches are contained in the writings.

I am concerned that our zeal of cooperation with other denominations and pressure of world tolerance of all religion weakens us more every day in temptation to compromise the purity and weaken the power of the gospel. This is done by recognition as gospel ministers those who preach a corrupt gospel and acceptance of the rite of baptism done with the improper symbolism of the gospel. The New Testament and past history of the Lord’s churches clearly encourages us against such concession of God’s truth for any reason.

These writings are not given for division, rebuke or correction. They are not meant for any individual, church or association. I desire a higher level of truth. I support and defend my Pastor Bother Larry White as he preaches a pure gospel. I support my church at First Baptist of which many as well are burdened for a pure gospel message that many might be saved. I support my brethren of this Ashley Baptist Association who also content in fellowship together for the faith of the gospel. I agree with The Baptist Faith and Message and continue to work in full cooperation in the Southern Baptist Convention.

I desire for my children and grandchildren to come to hear a pure gospel message in our Southern Baptist Convention. I believe when Baptist melt into Protestant popular theology this message will eventually become severely compromised as evidenced with Israel and false religions. Over the years when such a gospel melt down embraced the Lord’s churches God led some to stand and defend the gospel. I feel now is time for such a stand. The embracement of Protestantism and world religion will degrade over time the purity of the gospel message so as not to offend those we wish to accept.

I am always available to clear up confusion, answer questions and clarify our gospel message in Jesus Christ.

Your servant in Christ for the sake of the gospel,

William W. Henry Jr.
